Toyota is bringing back the Supra and we finally have spy photos showing the new sports car.

The photos show a fixed roof coupe that appears to have proportions similar to the FT-1 Concept, the stunning show car that teased this new machine. The style all around the development car is toned down compared to the concept, but it still looks plenty aggressive. Thick plastic is hiding the front end well, while small round taillights are visible in the back, though these might just be used for the prototype. We see shades of previous Supras in the design of this prototype, but Toyota might be doing that to throw us off.

Two of the photos also offer a glimpse of the interior, which looks more BMW than Toyota. The steering wheel and gauges appear to be out of a BMW, while the small wheel that controls the German brand’s iDrive infotainment system can also be seen.

Concrete details on the new Toyota sports car are slim, though plenty of rumors are circling the car. BMW is said to have done most of the development on the rear-wheel drive chassis and engine, while Toyota provided its hybrid technology for the new car. That means that turbocharged four- and six-cylinder BMW engines are possibilities to provide power, mated to a hybrid system.

As for body styles, the Supra is said to be a coupe only, while its sister car, the BMW Z5, is rumored to be only a roadster with a soft-top. Early on in development, BMW and Toyota said that the two cars will not be direct competitors, despite sharing many of the same internal components.

The Supra is expected to arrive after the new BMW Z5, likely as a 2019 model year vehicle.

New spy photos showing us the most detail we’ve seen yet of the upcoming Toyota Supra have hit the web.

Unlike the previous set of Supra spy shots, which featured a fully covered nose and tail, this latest prototype gives us a better idea what the production car will look like. Up front, cues from the Toyota FT-1 Concept can be seen, though a new array of air intakes have been added to the car.

More is revealed in the rear as well, with the taillight shape finally coming into view while the rear shoulders and decklid are both reminiscent of the FT-1. The overall style appears toned down compared to that wild concept, but that is par for the course with most automakers.

What is coming under the hood is still unknown, though there are a few hints floating around. In a recent spy video, it sounds like  some type of hybrid powertrain is helping the Supra drive, though once the driver kicks the throttle, you can hear the throaty exhaust of the internal combustion powerplant. Early rumors suggested that the powerplant is likely to be a turbocharged inline six-cylinder from BMW, but Lexus is also said to be working on a twin-turbo V6, an engine that could work here as well.

BMW and Toyota developed this car together, along with the new Z5, and are setting them up not to be competitors. For that reason, the Supra is said to be a coupe only while the new BMW Z5 will be a convertible only.

The Supra is expected to arrive after the new BMW Z5, likely as a 2019 model year vehicle.

Fresh photos of the upcoming 2019 Toyota Supra are giving us a new look at the car’s interior, and the BMW influence is clear.

Looking through the window, a BMW shifter for an automatic transmission is clearly seen, along with the same knob used on BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. Even the steering wheel appears to be from the new Z4, although a Toyota badge is clearly visible underneath some tape.

For those not in the know, BMW and Toyota paired up to develop this sports car, with BMW getting a new Z4 out of the deal and Toyota walking away with a new Supra. Toyota’s offering will be a coupe, while the BMW will be convertible only.

What will power the new Supra is still the car’s most important secret, and there are plenty of rumors. A turbocharged inline six-cylinder is one possible for the powerplant, while some type of hybrid setup has also been talked about.

In the BMW, a six-speed manual gearbox has been spied, but it was paired with a small 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which isn’t expected to be available in the Supra. So the availability of a manual in Toyota’s sports car is up in the air.

Nothing seems to have changed when it comes to the exterior design, which is heavily influenced by the Toyota FT-1 Concept.

The all-new BMW Z4 is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in production form, while a concept version of the car will arrive in August.

Arrival for the new Supra is unknown but is expected to debut sometime in 2018 as a 2019 model.
